1979. Een prachtig jaar waarin ik het Nationaal Songfestival van Suriname won. Ik zong toen als 17 jarige contestant het lied Srananman, een nationalistische compositie van Jerry Themen. Jerry was de leider van onze band Explotion bestaande uit Jerry Themen (gitarist), Rupert Christoffer (bassist), Alluisius (Sam) Samson (toetsenist), Jonne Guno Lacking (drums), Ruth Koenders (Fluitiste) en de zang door Martha Bruinings, Hugo Landolf en mij als leadvocalist. Het waren prachtige, zeer muzikale, creatieve tijden! Het unieke aan onze band was, dat wij alleen eigen werken brachten. Enkele van onze hits toen: Heartbreaker, Pina nanga noowtu, Wan deey sa doro, Mama mi e waarderi yu.

Mijn eerste stappen in de muziekwereld deed ik overigens op 10 jarige leeftijd. De muziek zat in onze opvoeding. Met name van mijn lieve moeder die gitaar speelde en zong. Thuis hadden we als broers, Dennis op de gitaar, Guno op de bas en ik zong, een huisbandje opgericht ondersteund door een buurjongen op een geïmproviseerde boterblik drum. Dit groeide uit tot een heuse band waarin ik de organist en zanger was. Deze kreeg de naam The Creators omdat wij enkel eigen composities speelden. Deze band groeide uit tot Explosion. Thans ben ik de leadvocalist van de swingende formatie Combé.

1979. A wonderful year in which I won the National Song Festival of Suriname at the age of 17 years. I sang the song Srananman, a nationalistic composition by Jerry Themen. Jerry was the leader of our band Explotion with the members Jerry Themen (guitar), Rupert Christoffer (bass), Alluisius Samson (keyboard), Jonne Guno Lacking (drums), Ruth Koenders (flute) and the vocals by Martha Bruinings, Hugo Landolf and me as lead vocalist. Those were wonderful, very musical, creative times! The unique thing about our band was that we only performed our own works. Some of our hits at that time: Heartbreaker, Pina nanga noowtu, Wan deey sa doro, Mama mi e waarderi yu.

My first steps in the music world I took at the age of 10. Music was part of our upbringing. Especially from my sweet mother who played guitar and sang. At home as brothers, Dennis on guitar, Guno on bass and I sang, we started a house band supported by a friend on an improvised butter can drum. This grew into a real band in which I was the organ player and singer. The band was given the name The Creators because we only played our own compositions. This band grew into Explosion. After that it was swing time with the tropical band Combé.

Suripop II in 1983. Bracht ik samen met Hugo en Sam, Hugo's compositie Too Bad. Ook het lied Jep bow wi Sranangron van Kenneth Moerli bracht op ik die avond ten gehore.

Suripop III in 1984. Het door mij vertolkte lied Boni Doro van Hugo Landolf en Ruth Koenders eindigde in de categorie politieke songs op de 1e plaats.

Suripop IV in 1986. Vertolkte ik in een duet met Grace Filemon het nummer Baby I love you van Hugo. Ook bracht ik zijn compositie Sranan Uma ten gehore, een ode aan de Surinaamse vrouw. Tevens vertolkte ik in een duet met Thelma Ment die avond het nummer Busi lobi.

Suripop V in 1988. Vertolkte ik het nummer Yu fosi lobi, een compositie van Johan Herbert.

Suripop VI in 1990. Mijn laatste deelname aan het Suripop festival met Condoom Kaseko een compositie van Harold Gessel.

Suripop II in 1983. Together with Hugo and Sam the song Too Bad. I also performed the song Jep bow wi Sranangron by Kenneth Moerli that evening.

Suripop III in 1984. The song Boni Doro by Hugo Landolf and Ruth Koenders, performed by me, ended in 1st place in the political songs category.

Suripop IV in 1986. There I performed the song Baby I love you by Hugo Landolf in a duet with Grace Filemon. I also performed the song Sranan Uma, a composition by Hugo Landolf, an ode to the Surinamese woman. I also performed the song Busi lobi in a duet with Thelma Ment that evening.

Suripop V in 1988. I performed the song Yu fosi lobi, a composition by Johan Herbert.

Suripop VI in 1990. My last participation in the Suripop festival with Condoom Kaseko a composition by Harold Gessel.
